Mokuren Dojo is the name of our martial arts school in the city of Magnolia in southwest Mississippi. Mokuren Dojo draws students from near-by cities including Baton Rouge, McComb, Brookhaven, and Hattiesburg. The name, Mokuren Dojo, translates into English as Magnolia Training Hall. I have been teaching martial arts in southwest Mississippi since 1996.What is aikido?
Aikido is a kind of jujutsu (Japanese martial arts), in which we specialize in getting out of the way of attacks and using the opponent's momentum and balance to control them. Aikido is great for self-defense.
Judo is another kind of jujutsu, but in judo the emphasis is on close grappling, throwing the opponent to the ground, and using chokes, holds, and jointlocks to make them submit. Judo can be done as a sport or as a self-defense.
The teacher at Mokuren Dojo is Patrick Parker, 6th degree black belt in aikido and 5th degree black belt in judo. Having started training in 1986, Parker has been teaching martial arts classes in Southwest Mississippi since 1996.

What about the blog?
The Mokuren Dojo blog started in 2006 as a training log from our practices at Mokuren Dojo, and as a way for the instructor to communicate some ideas outside of class-time. It grew in popularity, and rapidly restructured to a more instructional, more conceptual, less training-log format. Since 2007, Mokuren Dojo has consistently provided a steady flow of fresh content on a near-daily basis and has been one of a handful of the most popular and widely-read martial arts blogs in the world.
