About Mokuren Dojo

Mokuren Dojo is the name of our martial arts school in the city of Magnolia in southwest Mississippi. Mokuren Dojo typically draws students from cities including Baton Rouge, McComb, Brookhaven, and Hattiesburg. The name, Mokuren Dojo, translates into English as Magnolia Training Hall. I have been teaching martial arts in southwest Mississippi since 1996.

What is aikido?
Aikido is a kind of jujitsu (Japanese martial arts), in which we specialize in getting out of the way of attacks and pushing the opponent away. Sometimes when you push them away they fall down. Sometimes when they fall down you lock an arm to hold them down. Aikido is great for self-defense.
What is judo?
Judo is another kind of jujitsu, but in judo the emphasis is on close grappling, throwing the opponent to the ground, and using chokes, holds, and jointlocks to make them submit. Judo can be done as a sport or as a self-defense.
What is karate-do?
Karate is yet another form of fighting art, originally Okinawan, but imported to Japan in the early 1900's. Karate emphasizes ending fights quickly using strikes and kicks as well as take-downs similar to those found in jujitsu.
Who is the teacher at Mokuren Dojo?
The teacher at Mokuren Dojo is Patrick Parker, 6th degree black belt in aikido and 5th degree black belt in judo. Having started training in 1986, Parker has been teaching martial arts classes in Southwest Mississippi since 1996.

What about the blog?
The Mokuren Dojo blog started in 2006 as a repository for training logs from our practices at Mokuren Dojo, and as a way for the instructor to communicate some ideas outside of class-time. It grew in popularity, and rapidly restructured to a more instructional, more conceptual, less training-log format. Since 2007, Mokuren Dojo has consistently provided a steady flow of fresh content on a near-daily basis and has been one of a handful of the most popular and widely-read martial arts blogs in the world.
